How to clear the DNS Cache

The DNS Cache collects all the IP addresses of the web servers containing informations about the pages you've recently visited. If your hosting changes its IP address, as consequence of a migration on another provider for example, the DNS cache has to be cleared to display the website correctly. If you see the error 404 (HTML 404 error codes) on your screen, you need to clear your cache, to permit the correct resolution of the new DNS. The clear procedure of DNS cache depends on the operating system you use. Here is the full procedure you have to follow if you use a Windows or Mac OS operating system.

Windows

  • Open "DOS Prompt" and type "cmd" in Menu search field
  • Select the icon "Run as Administrator"
  • Type the following command: ipconfig /flushdns
  • Click "Enter".

If the command has been successfully processed you will see on your screen the following line:
Windows IP configuration successfully flushed the DNS Resolver Cache.

Mac OS

  • Open the "Terminal" from "Launchpad"
  • Type the following command:sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder
  • Click "Enter"
  • Type your Administrator Password.
