How to check an e-mail header

The header of an e-mail is the part of the message containing all the information regarding the steps carried out by the e-mail before arriving on a pc / server. Each computer / server that processes an e-mail, in fact, leaves a trace in its header, providing information on the origin of the message.

The procedure for retrieving an email header varies from client to client. Here are some examples.

In case you use Outlook Express - Outlook 2000 or Windows Mail you have to:

  • Select the e-mail, clicking the right mouse button
  • Click "Properties/Options"
  • Click "Details": here you'll be able to see the header.

In case you use Apple Mail - Eudora you have to:

  • Click, from the menu, "View", then "Messages" and, later, "Long Heading" (Apple + Capital + H).

In case you use Mozilla Thunderbird you have to:

  • Click, in the menu, "View"and then "Message Source".
